Would a 4L60E transmission from an '03 Tahoe work in my Envoy?

A friend of mine has an extra one of these transmissions. He said I can have it if I want it. My current 2002 Envoy original transmission has 205k miles. While it's been babied, and serviced religiously, one of these days I expect it to need a rebuild

I understand the Tahoe transmission will probably have the Tow Haul feature and my PCM may not be compatible. I also think it would have to have the bell housing swapped.

I'm just wondering if there is a way to program my PCM and whether this might fit.

P.S. my Envoy is 4x4

Tow/haul is a PCM activated program feature. Nothing different in the transmission. Since this platform never had it, it can't be activated. It's not even in the PCM tune.

The trannies themselves are the same internally. There might be a different output shaft and/or transfer case adapter.

I did pose the question to AI to double check and there might be a different connector:

Yes, a 2003 4L60E from a full-size truck (e.g., Silverado/Sierra with a 4.8L/5.3L) will generally fit a 2002 Trailblazer
, as both use the Gen III LS-style "300mm" input shaft and removable bellhousing. However, you must ensure you are swapping 4WD to 4WD or 2WD to 2WD and that the electrical connector is the same, as some 2003+ units transitioned to black connectors.
Key Considerations for the Swap:
  • Input Shaft Length: Both 2002 Trailblazer (4.2L) and 2003 full-size trucks (V8) use the ~300mm input shaft and deeper bellhousing, making them physically compatible.
  • Connector Color: Check the 12-pin main connector. While mostly compatible, some 2003 models updated the connector to black, while earlier ones were green.
  • Torque Converter: It is highly recommended to use the torque converter that matches the 2002 Trailblazer engine/PCM to ensure proper lockup operation.
  • Tail Housing/Transfer Case: If your 2002 Trailblazer is 4WD, you must use a 4WD transmission and swap the transfer case adaptor/tail housing to match.
Disclaimer: Always verify the transmission code (e.g., 3KCD for 2003) on the passenger side rail to ensure exact year-matching.

So as long as both transmissions are 4x4 you are good.. BUT.. There are 2 parts that are different.

The bell housing. If you have a 4.2, and the donor trans is a 5.3, than the bell housings have to be swapped.

The Torque Converter is different from a 4.2 to a 5.3 as well. I know some people like to use the 4.2 TQCon in the 5.3, but I am pretty sure the 5.3 TQCon wont fit in the 4.2 bell housing.
