Greetings all - I have a friend on a classic Buick site who is thinking of putting the front seats from a 2005 Buick Rainier into his '56 Buick and is stumped and posted for help.

Owning my XUV, I was pretty sure from the adventures I've had to date that the seats would be communicated to through the CAN bus and commanded by the BCM making this swap nearly impossible - is this correct ?

If anyone has ideas about how to use "our" seats in a retro application, all advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Alan W

If you go with the non powered versions of the seats, I'd think it would be as simple as bolting down the rails to the car's floor securely, and off you go.

The powered versions do have a Class II Data element, but it looks like the directional switch directly commands the different motors. I don't know what all is required, over the data bus, for them to work, or if that portion could be ignored. I assume the data bus is for seat memory, and probably for the heated seat bit...

Thanks for the reply .. and sorry I forgot to add that his pair have power, memory, heat, and lumbar which I'll assume he'd want to keep as much of as possible

The seat movement and lumbar stuff seems self contained. The memory requires the BCM, the heater selectors and indicators are contained in the door modules, so unless you find a way to account for those and their connections, some things might have to be given up. Definitely let us know how that turns out.

The heat and memory functions are controlled through ClassII communication with the Driver Door Module (DDM).

In a seat without memory the power switches control the motors directly.

In seats with memory, the switches provide input for the memory module which in turn controls the motors. I suspect the module will still provide power functions from the switches without a ClassII data bus but you will have to experiment to find out. If it doesn't it wouldn't be too hard to just rewire the switches directly to the motor like the non-memory seats.

I don't really see anyway to get the memory function without including a DDM. You could probably get heat by manually wiring the seat heater but this would take some more research.
