Long story. I got the new motor installed 2 weeks ago. It had a crack in the valve cover that was not discovered until after the motor was in and driven many miles. The smoke was a dead give away. Replaced valve cover and it was good, except there was a large amount of oil in the engine bay. No biggie. Powerwash it and done.

I parked in the driveway and noticed a good spot of oil each morning. Humm, I thought. I must have missed some oil when I washed it. After 3 days I finally checking the fluid color, and realize it is transmission fluid! Why did I not notice sooner? Because it was dripping into a spot where I had leaked oil earlier.

Now it gets bad. I pull the transmission dipstick after I get home from work and see little wafts of smoke coming out. Oh sh!t :hissyfit:
I added 3.5 quarts to bring it up to level. It was HOT. More smoke with each pour. F! Next I jack her up and see one of the trans lines had rusted through. This thing was spewing trans fluid for days!!

I had the lines replaced and drove the last 1.5 weeks without much issue. I noticed a "bog" around 2400 rpms, but thought it was something else. Also some slippage at the top of 1st and a hard shift into second when getting on it (relatively speaking), but wasn't tremendously concerned because I hardly even get on it.

Today I picked-up my boat from storage (18" fiberglass fish and ski) and could tell something was wrong as soon as I pulled out onto the road. No power. What felt like massive slippage. Pedal to the floor and going almost nowhere, although the rpms would not sckyrocket, the truck would not move either. It bogged more than anything. Gas off, gas on, gas off, gas on and I could get it to shift, but no power still. Pull over, let her cool 10 mins, and I was good for another few miles. Thankfully I made it home.

So that's my story. To the trans shop I go soon. I have no funds and it drives fine (relatively speaking) when not towing, so I may ride this out for a while.

Your thoughts? 166k on the trans. Is it likely toast, or just clutches (wishful thinking). :frown:

I CANNOT WIN THIS YEAR!!! :hissyfit:

Mine lost 1st completely at 81k. Two weeks after purchasing and the warrant company denied it and thankfully the dealership covered 100% of the cost. They replaced it with a jasper unit and it died. It lost 3rd and 4th completely on an 100 mile trip. It had only 16k on it. They replaced again and so far so good now 18k later. (knock on wood). The restarted the warranty on the second Jasper unit 3 years 100k.

Ah, that sucks. I am thankful it drives fine again (relatively speaking) after I unhooked the boat. This will give me time to shop around.

This is embarassing to admit, but here it goes. Despite the fact I had smoke coming out of the transmission, it is actually okay for now. My bogging, loss of power, perceived trans slipping, hard shifts, and inability to tow my boat were all the result of a CLOGGED CAT!

No kidding.. Had I not almost smoked the trans, I might have considered the cat, but I was convinced I totally screwed it. Apparently not yet anyways. :woot:

Good job! Always a relief to find out it's something easier.

I just had my transmission and engine replaced with a used 2006 set. I have an 02 as well. The 02 transmissions were the bad ones, so just keep any eye and ear out. Mine lasted 260k before it went.

Have fun!

I recall reading somewhere either starting in 06 or 07 the 4l60e received most of the 4l65e upgrades, again not sure exactly which year that started...

Sorry for the delayed reply... I don't get notifications for some reason.

Anyway, I understood it to be 2003 on. They realized their faulty design after 2002. That is what I was told.

clogged catalytic converter? How do you even check for that?

Google for "exhaust backpressure test."
