Baked them on 225 for 10 min and they fell apart with little force. Removed amber covers for corners. View attachment 33485

And waiting for paint to dry.

I'll ship u mines and you can do them lol

Much better. I cheated and bought the export headlights (back when you still could) which already had the black insets. :)

Yeah that wouldn't work

Anyone heard of anyone using Plasti-Dip to paint the lights? I want to paint mine, but I like the idea of the change not being permanent.

I was taking these items into consideration:
heat (will have 35W HIDs) may melt, bubble, liquify, or otherwise disturb the coating
thickness of the paint (though since it comes off easily, I guess I'd just have to open the housing and peel it off if it were to transfer and stick to the clear lenses).

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks,
Marc

I would not use plastic in there

Thoughts? Just 1, why would you EVER want to go back to that grey after having it black?

Grab yourself a rattle can of Krylon, spray it, and be happy.

Ain't right

It doesn't matter how you spell it - those shouldn't be on that truck. A pink Miata, purple Beetle, or pretty much any PT Cruiser - sure. Not on that truck.

I used plastidip, its been like 6 months now. Perfectly fine
Also used it on my muffler tip and its fine still too
Its not as black as i like but it works

FR34KOUT used plastidip on his too and its been on a lot longer than mine

I would love to do something like this but with a light colored truck i don't think black would look right. Any suggestion?

Plastidip works fine as the temp inside the housing isn't that hot. You have a space between the front painted part and the actual reflector.

I had a white 2012 xB and I did this on that. It looked sick. I think you would be alright.

Your truck is the same color as mine, and I love having my bezels painted black. But for a better comparison, check out ConeKilrAutoX's silver voy with black painted headlights.

Black goes smooth with anything. I have the imperial blue metallic paint and painting my bezels that color blue just would look terrible to me. So I sprayed a semi gloss black and they just pop now. No plasti dip for me in there. With the hassle, or time consuming for some, that you'll go through cracking open the lights just to spray a rubberized coating that Plasti Dip is. No thanks. I want something to last so I wont go through the hassle again of opening up the lights.

This sound stupid but did you just use silicone to seal it back up when you were done?

Not stupid at all. I used black RTV silicone to seal mine up. Quick and easy, and water tight. If I ever need to reopen them, a box cutter does the trick in a matter of minutes. (assuming you cut your lights open, instead of the heat method)

I put the blacked out set from my old truck (red) on my new truck (white) and they looked amazing. Anything looks better than garbage grey.

And what's this about going back to stock? You'll never want to go back to stock, that's for sure.
