Retractable Roof

My RETRACTABLE ROOF is now stuck on ¼ opened way and the dashboard displaying “See Manual-Tailgate”. Once I put on Drive-mode, the warning message on the dashboard displaying “Close or Open the Roof” and the constant chime never stops.

Can anyone help with this? I have checked all the related fuses, manually released and opened the tailgate and then closed. What is wrong with the Tailgate and where is the Tailgate’s sensor that keeps reporting with Tailgate?

I am assuming you have a XUV, and are talking about the roof of it?

Will the rear window roll up and down?

Gotta try a couple things first..
First start by using the overhead console.
Next try using your key in the tail gate.

If niether of those work, disconnect the battery for 10-20 minutes, then reconnect, Edit: and try the above steps again.

Hopefully this will get you started on the roof

I would need to know the answer to the above question to help further.

It is a “XUV” and YES, it is the “Retractable-Roof” that will not respond and it’s currently ¼ way opened.

By the designed; the rear-window cannot move if the “Retractable-Roof” is not FULLY-CLOSED.

Already tried all, issues remained unchanged.

Disconnected battery terminals for several hours issues remained unchanged.

I’m leaning toward if we can resolve the message “SEE MANUAL-TAILGATE” the problem might get resolved.
Currently, I’m at the “Catch22”; the Retractable-Roof cannot operate because the message “SEE MANUAL-TAILGATE” and the Tailgate cannot operate because the Retractable-Roof is partially open.
What trigger the “SEE MAUAL-TAILGATE”? Can it by-pass?

The message comes up any time there is a unexpected change, voltage drop, voltage peak, unresponsive, etc, etc, etc, with the retractable roof, or, the rear gate window. There is no bypass, edit: with one exception.

Exception Edit: Sometimes the TGM will forget the closed and open position reading for the tailgate window. This will throw up the message, but with the tailgate closed, you just use your key in the tailgate and roll it up. It will roll up a few inchs at a time, and stop. You repeat the process until its up all the way. Once all the way up, you hold the key for 30 seconds, and it remembers the up position. Then you repeat the process for down, and its learned. However, this does not help you with your current situation.

You may try a reset to the TGM (tailgate module), by unplugging it, and plugging it back in after 10ish minutes, but i doubt it will do anything. The TGM is located under the plastic cover of the tailgate.

Check over on youtube, channel WatchJRGo. He rebuilt almost the entire roof/tailgate system with great success, he collaborated with me a bit on his XUV and Aztek.

The only question I have, when you use the key in the tailgate, can you hear any actuators engaging/disengaging? On mine, I can hear them when the go into motion, even if they are at the end of their motion, I can still hear them try, before the TGM disengages them.

Ultimately if it isnt solved with these simple methods, a Tech2 might be your only way to get the specific issue that is the problem.

Per the XUV Specific Owners manual..

SEE MANUAL ±TAILGATE

Window position needs to be reset. Activate the tailgate window up switch and continue to hold it for two seconds after the window is fully closed. Then activate the tailgate window down switch and continue to hold it for two seconds after the window is fully open. If this process does not restore tailgate function, see your dealer for service.

But it does not give specific about the roof malfunctions, or how to clear them..

Whats the current position of the rear window?

Leaving TGM unplugged for over 30 minutes, the results remain unchanged.

The tailgate actuator will trigger alert that the roof needs to be closed. It’s working…

Tailgate window cannot be reset/operate because the roof is in an open position.

The rear window position is all the way down (default: required for the roof to be move/operate).

Yeap.. At this point, you are going to need a Tech2 to see if operating the roof thru the tool will work. If it does, there is a sensor out of calibration, or something. If it doesnt operate, the roof motor has failed, as happened to WatchJRGo in his video.

Thank you, TollKeeper for such diligent support!

Had this same problem. Issue ended up being the rear wiper wasn't fully "parking". I got lucky and it was just a broken wire going to the wiper motor.

That would be an easy one to diagnose, does the rear wiper work.

I had a bad motor on mine, never caused this issue thou. I have a spare tailgate in my garage thou, so had a spare wiper motor available.

The junk yard I went to today had an XUV. Nothing I needed.

not to over step the excellent comments to date, but when you said that you checked "all the related fuses"... how did you actually check them and which ones specifically did you check (ie. fuse number / position)? Further, you can do a "cheap check" of the motor with a resistance measurement.... you should see some resistance... not 0 and not infinity. This will tell you if the motor has some electrical "integrity". In addition, if you have a meter, again, check to see if you are getting the expected voltage at the appropriate pins at the power roof module to confirm that there isn't a poor / broken connection some where along the way.

Of course, as suggested, a tech2 would certainly go along way to finding out more information but some basic electric tests might provide a bit of useful information.
