transmission..deep or shallow?

Hey guys. I want to drop the pan, and replace the transmission filter, and fluid in my 2004 GMC Envoy XL ( 6 cyl) I have the option when I went to buy the filter, if I have a deep or shallow pan..I don't know..how do I check this? Also, I know it called for Dexron III fluid, is there any benefits of jumping up to Dexron VI ???

VI is an upgrade but not sure it is necessary

Almost all are deep pans. If you by some cahnce have the shallow you are in small company.

Yep what he said.

Easy way to double check is look at the pan. If there is a small "step" in the pan at the end then it is the deep pan (99.9%). If the pan is totally flat the whole way, it is the shallow pan.

I have yet to see a GMT360 with the shallow pan. I think that was reserved for the 4L60E in cars, but then my Camaro has a deep pan too so who knows.

You'll want the Dex VI. There are some benefits to using the Dex VI, which is what GM currently recommend s instead of the III.
