Hey guys so my envoy was driving perfectly normal the other day and All of a sudden the dash says "engine overheat" and all of the coolant had exploded everywhere. I thought it was maybe a hose had rotted. My girlfriend was driving and i was not around so she had it towed to a nearby pepboys. They are saying the water pump has blown and it will be over 500$ to replace. I just replaced the water pump about a year ago. Is this possible? Can someone give me a little insight with the little information i have provided?

If the seals went it would weep coolant I imagine but to blow coolant everywhere would make me lean towards a hose or maybe the thermostat froze or the radiator cap failed... I don't know.

Depending on who replaced it and what they did, its possible that its bearing could go "early". Probably easy to determine the "spin condition" of the pump.... turn it by hand (with belt off of course) and listen / see what happens.

Higher odds might be that the thermostat stuck closed... maybe.

Depending on the brand of the pump, it could have failed early but without seeing it, it's difficult to tell but to have coolant everywhere because of the pump itself is not likely IMHO. It could have slowly lost coolant and when it overheated, blew out the cap out or out the tank.

If you're stuck there, get it done and ask for the old part back. I'd also get the thermostat replaced. Both should be ACDelco. Since they have to remove the fan for the pump, removing the alternator for the t-stat will be easier so should just be an additional 1/2 hour to replace it. Besides, I would replace it because it was likely damaged during the overheat.

Thanks so much for the quick insight guys. I am pretty upset. i told them to go ahead with it already and that i still didnt think it was the water pump. And that i would like the old part back. I know alot about these cars but am limited when it comes to being mechanically inclined. I am going to be talking to them again later so we will see what they say.

I have replaced my water pump 3 times in 8 years. They do go out. I've never paid $500.00 to get it replaced. It only takes maximum of an hour to do and the pump brand new is only about $50 Most you should pay a shop is $200.00

I don't agree. RepairPal estimates the repair ranging from $535-916 in my area (94901)... I don't know where OP is located but depending on location this might not be too crazy.

Man i am just having a real hard time accpeting this. I have already called there twice, not sure why but i feel bad for bothering them. Should i just let it happen and deal with it after?

I am in michigan. 48315

I guess since I like to do my own mechanic work on my truck I can't see paying someone $500.00 to do something that only takes an hour to do. Hourly rate in Texas is definitely not $400.00 an hour and the pump only costs a maximum of $50. This is providing you have the proper tools to do it.

So, what was the final outcome?
