Got a whining noise under the hood I think it's the alternator, No check engine light. How long before this baby goes? Also any brand of replacement alternator better than the other?

Take a long screwdriver and listen to the idler pulley. The pulley is one of the major trouble items under the hood. Its an easy fix for under $50.00.

Thanks, I did not know that.

Also you can take the belt off and wiggle it to see if it moves (it shouldn't) also you can turn it by hand to see if it feels gritty or smooth like it should be.

I agree with the idler pulley. I had 2 of them fail on my truck. When you use the screwdriver trick, put it on the bolt that holds the idler pulley to the engine. Be careful to not hit the belt or the fan while you do this test.

Also double check the pulley on your tensioner, I have yet to have the pulley fail on that but rather have the idler pulley between the alternator and compressor fail but still a good thing to check and ensure it has good tension and isn't bouncing around too much.

Tensioner pulley was replaced about 4 years ago and doesn't seem to be bouncing around. I'll give it a second look to be sure. Hoping it's the idler pulley and not the alternator to save a few bucks.
